The Project is named as “Concrete Clutter” because it portrays the localized warming of urban cities compared to its surrounding rural areas due to human activities. The heat of the sun is absorbed and not reflected, due to increase in large amounts of paved and dark colored surface for instance roads, roofs and also building up high-rises or car parks, hence creating a concrete jungle to live in, which gives mental health problems in humans, destroying the natural environment and forcing wildlife to leave their natural habitat.
Australia being prone to the urban heat due to absence of ozone layer and Sydney, one of the biggest metropolitan of Australia, is facing the heat. Diverse weather conditions, Thermal properties of materials used, anthropogenic heat released in the city, less evaporative surfaces and reduction of wind penetration due to urban texture are a few causes for the rapid increase of Urban Heat Island Effect in Sydney. As per Bureau of Meteorology, the strong urban heat island factors due to intense concrete jungle of Sydney CBD, delay and even block the inflow of the sea breeze into western parts, which makes them the hottest.
Parramatta is Sydney’s second CBD as well as the historic heart of Western Sydney. Given the extent of development taking place in Parramatta, the high rises are contributing to the very same problem.
Westfield Parramatta, being one of the biggest built up structure at the center of Parramatta city, covers a bit over 6 hectares of exposed concrete, which is no good to the environment as it just makes the Urban heat Island problem worse.
This project aims to mitigate the problem by applying core objectives which can tackle the urban heat and lower it down by using Greening Measures, Reducing Anthropogenic Heat, Stormwater Management and Sustainable Urban Infrastructure. The project ambition is not only to mitigate the Urban heat but also spread the awareness by creating spaces where people can participate, learn and practice to overcome the problem together. Therefore, the project fulfill its architectural as well as social responsibility towards the environment.
