Public spaces tempt public interaction and greatly enhance and consolidate social, cultural and community aspirations. In Mumbai, unplanned urbanisation has left the city in a dense congested state with only 1.7 metre square of open public space per person.
Mumbai is a very culturally rich city, yet due to the density of population ,the existing public spaces - museums, art galleries, theatres, community centres, parks, neighbourhood hubs etc. - are in very few numbers and they do not meet the needs and wants of the community.Considering that Mumbai is such a prime city, it is in dire need of more public spaces that would enrich not only the community life but also the functionality, tourism of the entire city.
Today, we need to account for the environmental impact and for climate change and plan for flood resilience. We also need to improve public access and open up the waterfront.
